Filling 6oz fiberglass weave
« on: December 04, 2018, 09:52:20 PM »

Anyone have recommendations for filler to use when filling 6oz fiberglass weave?

I tried a two part bondo filler several years back, and remember sanding more/harder than i anticipated.  Might have been good amount of fumes as well, which i would like to avoid.

Leaning towards glass or phenolic balloons from us composites, but i have not tried any epoxy fillers yet.  Already have 635 epoxy resin/hardener.

Bondo is a polyester base rather than epoxy. I've had problems with it flaking off. I use glass microballoons in epoxy, easier to sand. My brother uses fumed silica (cab-o-sil) harder to sand. +1 for us composites! They have good prices and package smaller amounts for those of us who are'nt building entire sailboats.

Ordered quart each of 'Glass Bubbles' and 'Phenolic microballons' from US Composites.  Smallest size they had.   One of those should do the trick.

Do you take any precautions when sanding microballoons?  Dust mask, goggles, gloves, etc?  If dust mask, what kind of dust mask?
Just applied layer of phenolic balloons/spheres to 5.5" x 17" cone.
